MUM: COME HOME IMMEDIATELY, IT’S AN EMERGENCY.

The TEACHER walks up behind to MATTHEW

TEACHER
(Shouting)
What are you doing?

MATTHEW
(Defensive)
I gotta go sir.

TEACHER
What do you mean?

MATTHEW
(Starting to pack his things)
I’ve just gotta go, I’m sorry.

Matthew storms out of the classroom frantically as he starts making his way to the bus station.

MATTHEW briskly walks home to a locked front door. As he scrabbles for his keys he pulls out the key ring and unlocks the door.

CUT TO:

INT. HOME – DAY

When MATTHEW enters he stops to survey the hallway as you hear his deep breathing. The silence
is broken from a voice upstairs.

MUM
(Curiously)
Matthew is that you? Be careful I think there’s someone in the house. Get up here, now!

MATTHEW purposefully starts to head towards the stairs. As he places his foot on the first step a familiar voices calls him from the Living room.

MUM
(Protective & hushed)
Matthew, Don’t listen to it. Trust me don’t go up there, It’s a trap!

Frightened, MATTHEW heads through the hallway to inspect the voice. Cautiously scouting the rooms he notices the room looking untouched. A ticking from the dining room clock draws his attention to the next room.

MATTHEW
(Scared)
Mum? Where are you?

He walks straight into the dining room when a shiver runs down his spine. As he notices a chair pushed out as though somebody is sitting in it. He slowly approaches the chair to replace it into its original position when a loud dripping sound comes from the kitchen.

MATTHEW
(shakily)
Is somebody there?

He starts walking towards the kitchen, moving cautiously while constantly checking his surroundings. He slowly opens the door to make his way to the tap to turn it off. Recognising a note that wasn’t on the fridge before the familiar handwriting gives him a nervous feeling. Edging
his way closer to the note, he realises the note was written by his mum. “Working late, won’t be home tonight. Love Mum x” Just as Matthew finishes reading the note we see an instant look of dread in his face as a dark, grotesque figure starts to grows behind him.

  • Clothes swap with the locals so its more real
  • All natural lighting or small lamp lighting, not bug lights
  • Fits into the auteurs style
  • Common theme of people struggling between addiction and life

  • Entire community seems to be related but treat each other terribly
  • Less non-diegetic sound for a realistic feeling
  • Following the story of a strong female protagonist
  • Shot on a single hi-res red DV camera
  • Super 8 camera scene for older, dream like style with story incorporated
  • Actors had more freedom over where they placed themselves and had more improvisation to see what worked well.

Film synopsis

Film Synopsis

Our film sequence begins with an elderly man walking through a park. The park is unpopulated  and almost silent, which symbolises how the man feels empty, isolated and alone.

As he walks along, the man reminisces about memories he has of times he’s enjoyed with his wife. He recalls when they first met, his proposal, their wedding day, and the day their child was born.

In all of his flashbacks, the character’s will appear as silhouettes and he will remember them in third person. The music playing over these shots should be romantic and sweet, as well as giving an underlying message of sadness.

Between each flashback, some shots of the real world will be shown, as the sky gradually becomes darker and the non diegetic music intensifies. We will use a blink effect to differentiate between the flashbacks and reality.

The last flashback will be the man’s recollection of his wife’s murder, and how her remembers kneeling next to her with blood all over his hands.

The last shot in the sequence is of the man, having reached his destination, stands looking over his wife’s grave, in complete darkness, contemplating taking his own life. The man closes his eyes and the screen fades to black.
